Sports Hall of Fame
The hall of fame in the foyer of the
Waitaki Community Recreation Centre
officially opens on November 27
The first recipients are:
Trish Hill
a Paralympics athlete who represented New Zealand between 1975 and 1988,
winning 36 international medals and trophies.
Ian Hurst
an All Black between 1972 and 1974. He played 32 games for New Zealand,
scoring 11 tries and notching up 44 points.
Gary Robertson
a member of the New Zealand rowing eight which won a gold medal at the
European championships in 1971 and a gold medal the following year at the
Olympic Games in Munich.
Rusty Robertson
a rowing coach who coached the New Zealand eight to a gold medal at the
Olympics in 1972, as well as numerous other successes.
Jack Sutherland
represented New Zealand against Australia in 1949 and won the 440 yards
race. A year later he won a bronze medal in the 440 yards relay at the
British Empire Games and finished fifth in the 440 yards.
Betty Forbes-Taylor
won a bronze medal in the high jump at the British Empire Games in Sydney
in 1938.
